Glifo Communications provide UbiRoam, a portable solution to implement mobile communications based on GSM standard in isolated areas.

Typical applications are:

• Communications on board of yachts, cruise ships and ferry boats, both locally, as mobile extension of the internal PBX, and roaming to the mainland networks
• Rapid network deployment in crisis areas (earthquakes, floods or other disasters),
• Communications on offshore platforms,
• Communications within construction yards in deserts and other isolated areas.

The solutions is based on the so called nano cells technology, that is a small scale GSM technology designed to implement small GSM cells to cover local areas within buildings or other delimited areas. Transport is based on a standard TCP/IP network, while interoperation with other networks is achieved through standard SIP/RTP interfaces.

UbiRoam software components:

• Mobile switching centre (MSC),
• Translation and routing SQL database,
• Short Message Service Centre (SMSC),
• GPRS Service Node.

Hardware details:

• Mobile phone access point, the so called BTS (Base Transceiver Station),
• Base Station Controller (BSC) to manage the BTS,
• Rack mount appliance.

These components are interconnected through a standard TCP/IP network. Satellite link to obtain LAN connection to the Network Operations Center on the mainland is needed in isolated solutions like on board of ships.
